Some questions to ask before applying for a new mobile contract:

Have you tried to apply for a mobile phone contract and been refused?

If the answer is yes then it is important you know why. If you have had any credit in the past and had any defaults or missed payments this could have affected your credit score. If you know for sure that you have a problem with your credit history then visit our bad credit pages. If you are unsure then you may like to take out a credit check on yourself. This will show you any problems that maybe stopping you getting accepted for a mobile phone contract.

Do you have any credit history?

If you have no credit history but are over the age of 18 and have a fixed address then there is still a good chance that you will be approved by one of the major networks for a new contract.

If you have credit history and do not know why you have failed a credit check then you need to do a credit check on yourself to work out the reason as it could be something as simple as a spelling mistake or minor error with the information provided. The problem could be that previous credit providers hold in correct information which has led to a decline for credit.

Things to consider when trying to apply for a mobile phone contract:

Think about what it is your agreeing to and act as if it were any other financial decision. As it is a credit agreement each mobile phone network will have their own criteria for acceptance. This is based on how credit worthy you are and by using key indicators such as if you have missed bill payments can determine if you are likely to get accepted or not.

Things that will stop you getting a mobile contract:

- No Credit history
- Errors on your credit report with experian or equifax
- Non payment of bills or missed payments

Tips for getting approved:

Check your credit reportĀ  for wrong information or address details. You may also want to check id checking services to make sure that no one is using your name to apply for credit. These services usually charge but if you get a free trial it is easy to cancel if you call up.

- Check your credit file with Equifax, Credit Expert or any other credit agency

By applying for a high end mobile contract for 24 months with the latest phone could mean a decline as from the data we have more applications get declined for the most expensive phones than cheaper alternatives. Newer high cost phones reduce the profit margin for mobile phone networks and so the risk is increased because if the contract is not honoured the mobile network will lose out to a greater degree.

- Apply for a mid range handset on a fair tariff for 18 months for the best chance of approval

Apply for mobile networks that are more willing to accept no credit history customers. Orange and T-Mobile are considerate of even customers with bad credit but may ask for a security deposit before allowing the phone to be dispatched.

- Apply with T-Mobile, Orange or Three for best chance of approval

Apply for a sim only contract either 30 day or 12 month. There is a good reason for getting a sim only deal other than you get alot more minutes, texts and internet access than a regular contract – As there is no phone there is alot less risk to the mobile phone network and so greater chance of approval. After several months it may be possible to upgrade to a full mobile contract which will be much more cost effective than pay as you go.

- Apply with Three for the best chance of approval
